2018 Make Music Day Rhodes

As part of Make Music Australia, the City of Canada Bay held the inaugural Rhodes Make Music Day to give local musicians of all ages and abilities the opportunity to bring their music to the streets of Rhodes. It was a fantastic day full of music, dancing and laughter.

Angus Whitington is a performance student from TAFE NSW EORA college. He is performing “St James Infirmary” and “11th Hour Blues” as part of Make Music Day 2020.

Arirang

A traditional Korean folk song, performed by Mixed Beans multicultural choir as their first “iso” production. One of the choir’s members Ae Sook, brought this song from her homeland to the choir and it was then arranged for Mixed Beans by the choir’s conductor Cath Mundy.

Baby’s Favourite Things Interactive Music Concert for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers with Baby Love Music Fun

DISCOVER YOUR BABY’S FAVOURITE THINGS in this 50 minute LIVE STREAMED interactive music concert for babies and toddlers by Baby Love Music Fun.

Babies and toddlers and the adults who love them will be given the chance to discover their favourite things together in a 45 minute interactive concert exploring this theme.

Join Australian opera singers Melanie Maslin and Aurora Lee as they lead you and your baby or toddler through key musical and movement activities that babies find fun and stimulate their development.

This concert will incorporate well known music such as the Sound of Music, Lovely Bubbles using Offenbach’s Barcarolle Duet, Over the Rainbow, Puff the Magic Dragon, a duet from Humperdink’s Hansel & Gretel and more. Baby Love Music Fun’s concerts feature live singing, dancing, props and facilitated movement to enhance you and your baby or toddler’s experience of music.

The theme is Favourite Things and activities will include plenty of your little ones favourites: boxes, teddies, balloons, bubbles, rainbows and dancing to name a few.

Singing tips and a surprising career start

José was scheduled to perform the role of Escamillo in Victoria Chorale’s postponed production of Carmen. He is one of the most exciting operatic artists of his generation. Consistently praised for his smooth, rich, powerful voice, thrilling top notes and magnetic stage presence, José has performed in the leading houses of the world including Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real Madrid, Los Angeles Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Seattle Opera and Opera Australia. In 2015, José joined the roster of principal artists at the Metropolitan Opera.

Camden Shorts 2020

A showcase of young musicians and artists from Camden in a diversity of genre of music. Featuring Logan Chan on piano with instrumental pieces of classical music, vocalist and pianist-Reesha with original compositions, 12 year old Ethan Kapitanow on electric guitar and vocalists Amy Jones, Hamani Tanginoa and Katelyn Medina-Prenol with popular contemporary songs and Marley-Paige Willis, guitarist playing her original songs.

Also including singing sister duo, Like Angels with original songs, 12 year old Benham Flatman on guitar with a popular and original song and young classical musicians from the Fishers Ghost Youth Orchestra.

Chris Currie and Heloise Fortin ( Live at TAFE NSW Eora College Theatre)

Chris Currie and Heloise Fortin are performance students from TAFE NSW Eora College. For Make Music Day 2020, they performed the original songs “Crazy People” and “Weren’t meant to be” and covers of “Daddy Lessons”, “La Vie en Rose”, “Blue” and “Wolf”

Darlene & the Toy Boys

Darlene & the Toy Boys, hot Sydney-based live covers band, interpret old skool & new skool, disco, funk, pop, rock & soul grooves to get the party started. Repertoire includes covers of Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Paramore, ACDC, GnR, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Adele, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Salt n Pepa, the Trammps, & many more. Darlene is a proud Wiradjuri woman, leading a multi-cultural mix of best friends, now all true-blue Aussies.

Darlene and the Toy Boys are graduates from TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus performance course and are performing their unique versions of Falling, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Crazy and Juice as part of Make Music Day 2020.

Hi, we are Dumb Desires! We are a TAFE NSW made band from Nirimba college at Quakers Hill, but we are also extremely close mates who love making music and having a good time. We are learning about music together, and having an absolute blast while doing so. We all met each other at the beginning of last year and have been playing music together ever since. As a collective, we’ve been through a lot together, and we’ve made all different kinds of music over the past year. We love to have a good laugh and make the most of being together. We really hope you enjoyed the songs we covered for Make Music Day!!

During lockdown our choir has continued to meet virtually via Zoom and while singing together in real time doesn’t really work, our talented Choir Director, Stuart Davis, encouraged us to record our parts which were then blended into this great version. We can still make music together!

Freedom Train Choir | “Let It Go” by Leunig & Frisk

Performed by Freedom Train community choir. Our first “iso” recording in tribute to Meryl, one of the choir’s former members who died unexpectedly in the early stages of quarantine (not of COVID-19). If we couldn’t go to her funeral to sing, this seemed the best way to say a songful “farewell, with love” at a distance.

Greenhand Band (Live from TAFE NSW Eora College Theatre)

Poverty, racism and inequality are cornerstone concepts Redfern-based reggae fusion group Green Hand Band aims to break down barriers about. Drawing musical influences from soul, reggae and desert rock genres, the group uses music to raise awareness of issues such as recovering from addiction, spiritual empowerment, love and social justice. Key writer, keyboard player and vocalist, Tim Gray leads the band bringing an infectious passion to the stage.

The Gumbaynggir/Wiradjuri man born in Macksville, NSW, and growing up in East Hills along the Georges River, Tim was influenced by the likes of Bob Marley, Warumpi Band and Coloured Stone. He started playing piano at his foster mother’s prompting and the music grabbed a hold of him; he started writing his own songs and playing in bands. “I want to make music that heals, that breaks down barriers and explores the human condition,” Tim says

Goodbye To Nashvile

Suzanne Petersen is a published award-winning songwriter and vocalist/pianist. A bit of folk, a bit of pop, a lot of blues and roots and a bit of the jazz chanteuse. Her last two albums got recognition in the Australian Radio Blues and Roots charts and she has recorded 10 more originals “Our Street” to be released. Suzanne has recorded with Tim Gaze for the surf movie “Band On the Run”, toured with Dutch Tilders RnB6 as flautist and backing vocalist and more recently gigs and festivals in Victoria such as the Eltham Jazz Food & Wine Festival with her band.

Suzanne took a trip for the first time to New Orleans in 2018 and this song was written on the Amtrak line from New Orleans to Memphis, then she got the bus to Nashville as the song says. Suzanne was in a New Orleans when Aretha Franklin died and it was a resounding experience.

James is a proud Gamillaroi man and past student of Eora TAFE and is now a teacher at the college where he mentors and guides other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.

Through his studies at TAFE NSW EORA college performance course, he met current bandmates Millie Dorn and Clifford Blake and has since been gigging with his band Hard as Folk, playing drums/percussion and rapping.

I know why

‘I know why’ is the lead track from Rock Farm Road‘s debut album ‘Light my Way’ released independently by Paul and Danielle Kneipp In November 2019. The album has ten uplifting songs played by excellent Sydney musicians Rex Goh, Jeffrey Bartolomei, and Mark Costa. This song is about watching the love in your family grow.

If I Give My Heart To You?

This is a short and sweet statement of commitment (though asked as a question) recorded at Woodstack Studios, on the South Coast of NSW on a Kawai grand. It’s the top download from my Soundcloud music website (stevecrumpmusic.com) so I guess some people like it – hope you do too.

IN THE DEEP END

Electronic music artist Jamie Lee Wilson aka JVMIE watched the pandemic loom over her LA-based life. After much deliberation, and seeing lines down the block from local gun stores, she returned to Australia. Where some may have found the experience overwhelming, for Jamie it led to the creation of an entire album, most of which was written and recorded during her time in quarantine.

With the help of a mini-grant from Home of the Arts on the Gold Coast, Jamie was able to collaborate with musical counterparts on the other side of the world.

JVMIE collaborated remotely with LA based film composer, Lionel Cohen fusing elements of electronic music with cinematic textures. The isolation project involved some serious ‘outside the box’ creativity, at one point even milk was involved.

“For the In The Deep End music video, I spent days shooting and editing 2 completely different concepts that didn’t work. I asked my mum to help out with a photo concept and pour milk into the bath for this shot, she thought it was stupid idea and poured it over my head laughing. It ended up being the album cover and the inspiration for the music video”

International Make Music Day

Make Music Day is a day of music open to all in the streets, businesses, parks, venues and wherever people feel like playing or listening. Make Music Day Australia joins other events worldwide as communities come together in celebration of music and the countless benefits that making music brings.

Jack Howard & The Long Lost Brothers

Jack Howard (from Hunters and Collectors) and his great new band The Long Lost Brothers recorded live at RMIT for Make Music Day 2020. Nicky Del Rey – guitar, Ed Bates – pedal steel guitar, Rob Walker – bass, Cal McAlpine – drums, Fiona lee Maynard – tambourine, backing vocals.

Jade Kenji (Live from TAFE NSW Eora College Theatre)

Jade Kenji is an emerging singer, songwriter, rapper and producer from Sydney, Australia. With heavy influences from Neo-Soul and New Jack Swing, her sound is quietly smooth, yet feisty and playful. By drawing from her own personal experiences as a Vietnamese-Australian, she hopes to be a voice for queer women of colour, to create dialogue around race, gender, culture and identity and encourage others (Asians especially) to feel the fear, follow their hearts and live creatively.

Jade performed at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to commemorate International Women’s Day in 2013. She has also played at other Sydney venues such as Foundry 616, Lazybones Lounge and Red Rattler. In 2019, she was selected to participate in a government funded music study tour of the USA. There she met with industry professionals and attended live talks and gigs at SXSW, featuring artists such as Questlove, Shirley Manson and Nile Rogers.

Jade is currently working on her debut EP and is collaborating with other Sydney rappers and producers such as Kermz, Shukaku and Benjamin Creak. She’s in the final semester of an Advanced Diploma in Music Performance at TAFE and is looking to release her first single later this year.”

Jam Pact (Live from TAFE NSW Eora College Theatre)

Joseph Jayde Trueman, professionally known as Joe Trueman and Busker Joe AKA J. Rasta , is a New Zealand born singer, songwriterand music producer. As a solo artist, Joe Trueman embraces a unique individuality with a fusion of genres and styles ie; an Aussie roots-rock guitarist-singer playing an eclectic mix of reggae, folk, blues, pop, rock and acoustic soul. In addition to performing as a solo artist, Joe is also the frontman for the band Jam Pact , a classic rock & soul covers band that formed in Sydney in 2016 .

Jam Pact are performance students from TAFE NSW Ultimo campus. Enjoy their energetic versions of Unchain my heart, Dancing in the streets, Superstition, River Deep Mountain High, My Girl and Lady Marmalade for Make Music Day 2020.

Jazz Masterclass + Q&A Session (Nock/Stuart/Zwartz Trio)

ARIA-Award winning bassist Jonathan Zwartz and legendary drummer Hamish Stuart form one of Australia’s great jazz rhythm sections. In this special Make Music Day event, they join forces with luminary pianist and Bell Hall of Fame inductee Mike Nock ONZM for a fascinating masterclass that captures the excitement and immediacy of improvised music and showcases the brilliance and creative dexterity of this exceptional ensemble.

Collectively this jazz super group comprises the most sought-after and experienced players on the Australian scene, having won almost every possible jazz accolade and performing with a host of international giants, and Jonathan Zwartz is currently serving on the APRA Board of Directors. After the masterclass join in on an insightful Q&A session after the masterclass mediated by the Australian Institute of Music’s Greg Coffin.

Lily Savelli is studying a Certificate IV in Music Industry (Performance) at Wollongong TAFE. She has been singing for 3 years and writing her own songs since she was 13. This is her first professional gig and she’s very excited to share her original songs with a wider audience. Lily’s key influences are mxmtoon, dodie, Lord Huron, Billie Eilish and Hozier.

She is performing three original songs – “Blue”, “Coffee at Midnight” and “I loved you yesterday” – as well a great version of Watch for Make Music Day 2020.

Lulu Ilanda’s honest vocals and songwriting bring an assembly of emotional moments to the stage, accompanied by spirited guitarist Victor Jesus, whose masterful musicality allows for a rare wilderness to sustain the duo. Together they offer a moody psychedelic folk-rock sound which will leave you goose-bumped and open-hearted.

THE MERCY KILLS – ALONE

You Can’t Make It Alone!

This new single titled ‘Alone’ by The Mercy Kills is their first offering after signing with Golden Robot Records in March 2020.

The band were keen to create a video for the new single and not let restrictions hamper their efforts.

Working online with Daniel Armstrong (Strongman Pictures) and Rom Anthonis, the band produced this tongue in cheek look at the day to day with TMK.

Our Second Isolation Project.

Since 1958, Our community Brass Band , BondiBrass, has been an integral part of local commemorations in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia.

This Project is our ISOVideo entry for the WAVEovision Make Music Day broadcast 21st June 2020.

Usually we are performing at Bondi Pavilion on this Day as part of Waverley Council Cultural Projects.

Under the baton of our Music Director, Megan Lipworth, please enjoy our version of this sign of the times, as it seems to be all about the “Money, Money, Money”

We are always looking for new members , young or old, no auditions, – just turn up when we can all start getting together again – practice is at Kensington , Sydney on Tuesday nights 7.30-9.30 , all have varied experience and we can teach as well if a bit rusty – welcome comeback players! you know you can do it….

This performance of Queen in Concert was for the first year anniversary of MMG Concert Band of Victoria. We celebrated by hosting a Gala Night to celebrate the years success with our musicians, students, members and community.

This was the final piece performed at our concert.

To finish the night we had a traditional Maltese march in the hall, with flags, dancing, chanting and singing.

Sydney Children’s Choir performs ‘The Letter’ at Rouse Hill Estate, Sydney Living Museums

‘The Letter’ by Samuel Lover (1797-1868) is a song that was discovered in a large collection of sheet music at Sydney Living Museums’ Rouse Hill Estate, in north-western Sydney. It was one of over forty printed music pieces that had been bound together in a single volume in around 1840. Individually purchased in Sydney in the 1830s, the pieces represented the playlist of a young wealthy couple, Lilias and Willoughby Dowling. How this volume of music ended up at Rouse Hill Estate we do not know, but we suspect it has been there for well over a century.

Originally written for voice and piano, ‘The Letter’ was arranged for the Sydney Children’s Choir by composer Jessica Wells as a two-part choral work for 22 voices and accompanied by piano and violin. The choir rehearsed and made an audio recording under the direction of Lyn Williams before visiting Rouse Hill Estate for filming.

Making its premiere as part of Make Music Day, this performance was filmed prior to COVID-19 restrictions.

Victor Jesus is a Brazilian musician who has been living in Sydney for the last 2 years. His music explores traditional rhythms and genres from Brazil mixed with jazz concepts of improvisation.

Victor Jesus and Lulu Ilanda are performance students from TAFE NSW Ultimo campus. With special guest Michael Brown, they are performing three covers – Last Train Home, Balafon, Flor De Lis as well as an original called “Melhor coisa do mundo” as part of Make Music Day 2020.

Victoria Chorale Interviews Renowned baritone José Carbó

Victoria Chorale is sharing this relaxed interview with the delightful José Carbó. He demonstrates several excellent singing tips, and tells the surprising story of how he went from being a builder to an opera star! José is interviewed by Victoria Chorale’s conductor, Mario Dobernig and also responds to questions from the choristers.
José was scheduled to perform the role of Escamillo in Victoria Chorale’s postponed production of Carmen. He is one of the most exciting operatic artists of his generation. Consistently praised for his smooth, rich, powerful voice, thrilling top notes and magnetic stage presence, José has performed in the leading houses of the world including Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real Madrid, Los Angeles Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Seattle Opera and Opera Australia. In 2015, José joined the roster of principal artists at the Metropolitan Opera.

Vocalise (Rachmaninov)

This is a musical response to the devastating fires on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Recorded during lockdown in a deserted Elder Hall, University of Adelaide with pianist Konstantin Shamray- both of us unable to visit our respective home countries of England and Russia, giving it an extra poignancy for us- and is an advance video single for a longer duo album recoded last year and due for release soon. It is designed to raise money for the SA State Emergency Relief Fund. Hope you like.

What Happens When 350 Musicians Meet For The First Time In Brooklyn?

We at NPR Music leave a lot of variables out in the wild when we make Field Recordings. That’s especially true when we commission new music for the annual Make Music New York festival, as we have for three years.

Since we’re not using a traditional stage and people are roaming around, we don’t know exactly what the performance will sound like (though we’re lucky to work with fantastic engineering colleagues). It’s always held outdoors, and we can’t be sure what the weather will be.

And in two of these three years — the first and this one — we’ve flung the doors open and invited anyone who wanted to perform to come play alongside professionals. Pretty risky, right?

But what we’ve found, and what is so incredibly gratifying, is that amazingly talented and generous people join in — this year, about 350 of them on the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library. With a new piece by Sunny Jain of Red Baraat, the beat and the heart were there already, but the spirit burst to life when all those musicians came out to play.
