The Caribbean Steel Rhythms Northcote

The Caribbean Association of Victoria -CaribVic Inc.  has a Community Steelband based in Northcote Victoria.

The CaribVic Steelband consists of 23 recycled oil drums fashioned into chromatically pitched percussion instruments originating from Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies, and from their inception in the 1930s, have been tightly tied to community, and inclusive of the socially disadvantaged. The CaribVic steelband’s repertoire encompasses Calypso,  Latin-style and Reggae as well as arrangements of more popular Western songs.

For performance purposes, the Steelband works best as purely instrumental.

However the Boite choristers known as Thursday’s Children will perform their repertoire of Folk songs during interludes.

Fête de la Musique in Melbourne

This winter, la Fête de la Musique is coming to the Alliance Française for a night of free music, mulled wine, and soupe à l’oignon – uniting French tradition with Melbourne’s rich music culture.

Also known as Make Music Day, the French celebration occurs every year on the 21st of June – the northern hemisphere’s summer solstice – and allows and encourages musicians to play outside in their neighbourhoods, public spaces and parks, where spectators can enjoy live performances, all for free. The Alliance Française will be adapting the event for the Melbourne winter, opening its doors, and providing the spaces for these concerts to take place, complete with mulled wine and French onion soup.

In keeping with the spirit of the event, a variety of musical genres will fill the spaces in the Alliance Française’s exquisite Eildon Mansion: from the old basement kitchen, to the grand staircase, with an exciting line-up of local performers (see below).

Our friends at Melbourne Accueil will be serving mulled wine, and traditional French onion soup will be available, prepared by renowned French chef Philippe Mouchel, with the kind help of French Assist. The Frencheese food truck will also be on site, serving warm raclette over potatoes and charcuterie, and the Crêpes for Change van will be serving hot crêpes!

Make Music Day Australia 2018 Sing and Play Session

Come along and celebrate Make Music Day 2018 with us and join in on our FREE Sing and Play Session at Hawaiian’s Melville!!!

“Make Music Day is a free celebration of music making around the world on June 21st.” We would like to bring this opportunity of making music to the community here in Perth, by inviting parents and their children along to a FREE Make Music Day “Sing and Play” session at Hawaiian’s Melville. Bring along any instrument you have around the house whether it be a rattle, maracas, ukulele, tambourine, or even some pots and pans and join with us in playing and singing some of your favourite well known children’s songs. We will sing and play along to lots of songs you might already know and you might even learn a new song or two!

Your leading artists, Michaela Ivory otherwise known as “The Musical Mum” and Rebecca Flanagan from “Musical Experiences for Children” will be guiding you through the Sing and Play session and we look forward to making music with you and your children!

Music provides a multitude of benefits to young children by helping to develop language and literacy skills, aids in social and emotional development, improves fine and gross motor skills, enhances listening ability, as well as being fun, creative and joyful.
