Composing Women celebrating Make Music Day at The Women’s Club Sydney

June 21, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us at The Women’s Club for a recital program organised by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Composing Women’ led by Professor Liza Lim showcases new music and research ranging from Indigenous composer Brenda Gifford’s musical expression of Yuin country in her work ‘Mungala (clouds)’, to Bree van Reyk’s heart-centered ‘A series of breaths’, to work by Fiona Hill who uses special gestural controllers to modulate ambient drones and electronic sounds. Jane Sheldon will discuss her composition ‘poem for a dried up river’ which premiered at the 2021 Sydney Festival.

Brenda Gifford is a composer and Yuin woman whose culture is the basis of her art practice. She has been commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Canberra International Music Festival, Four Winds Festival, and is Resident Composer with Ensemble Offspring. Her ARIA nominated album “Music for the Dreaming” is available on ABC Classics.

Jane Sheldon is an Australian-American soprano and composer. Described as “riveting” (New York Times), her music focuses on the body in altered or transformative states. She has established an international reputation for contemporary opera and art music performance and has appeared at international arts festivals across the globe.

Bree van Reyk is a drummer, percussionist, composer, and sound artist who makes highly original, unconventional, and challenging performance works. Her music is equally warm-hearted and celebratory as well as being focused on issues of equality, and resides in the intersection between contemporary classical, indie-rock, and performance art traditions.

Fiona Hill is a composer specializing in electroacoustics and immersive sound. Described as having a “powerful emotional impact” (The Advertiser), she often explores the dichotomy between the natural and industrial worlds, attempting to find the beauty and resilience of the human psyche where worlds collide.

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.

Bookings for the FREE Recital is Essential. Please indicate when booking if you will be purchasing a light supper ($25)
